The History of Luhur Uluwatu 'The Cliff Temple'

Pura Luhur Uluwatu or known as the Uluwatu temple is located on a steep rock cliff about 97 meters high above sea level at Pecatu Village, Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali, about 30 km to the south of the city of Denpasar.
Uluwatu temple is a temple to worship God Rudra also included in Sad Kayangan Temple which is believed by Hindus as protection for the island from 9 different directions.

This temple was used as a place to worship a holy priest from the 11th century named Empu Kuturan. He handed down a rule about Traditional Village and how to applied it in Bali. and after that this temple was used to worship the next holy priest, namely Dang Hyang Nirartha, a Hindu priest from East Java who was also the bhagawanta (royal priest) of Gelgel during the golden age of Dalem Waturenggong around 1460-1550. He ended his holy journey with what is called Moksa (going to heaven without leaving the dead body) or also known as Ngeluhur in this place. This word is the origin of the name Pura Luhur Uluwatu.

In front of the temple there is a small forest called Alas Kekeran, which functions as a protection for the sanctity of the temple. And this forest is also inhabited by hundreds of monkeys, which requires visitors of this temple to be careful with their stuff because these monkeys really like stealing visitors’ belongings. They will throw back the things they stole when we throw food in return.
